My Books
Race: A Picture Book for ALL Kids,
This is NOT a "children's book"!!
I'm a four decade veteran teacher of advanced classes. Literally THOUSANDS of smart, driven kids have come through my classroom. In recent years, I've encountered an upsetting number of them, dogmatically plowing along their life's trajectory. They're unnecessarily stressed, overextended and unhappy. They see their lives as a humongous checklist, and spend every waking hour trying to fill in all the spaces.
This is particularly sad because these are our brightest humans. They're the ones who will discover and invent and cure and build and create the most amazing things... Every time one of them burns out, all of us lose the contributions they might have made.
I find that unacceptable.
We can blame an antiquated and misguided school system; We can blame "helicopter" or "lawn mower" parents; We can blame social media... We can blame whoever the hell we want... From the perspective of the crushed kids, it doesn't matter.
Sooooooooooooooo;
I wrote and illustrated this poem on how to pursue and achieve excellence without losing perspective. I'm hoping it'll start a quiet internal conversation. Please consider reading and sharing it.

The Giant War: Immovable Objects
Science Fiction Long before the extraordinary was confined to the realm of children’s tales… Giants walked the Earth. Fifteen feet tall, powerful, long lived, they hunted the colder regions of Northern Europe in tight nomadic tribes, thriving unchallenged… Until a tiny, clever, mindlessly aggressive, voraciously reproducing competitor invaded their habitat. In such confrontations, Darwinian rules predict inevitable and unavoidable conflict. The odds would have favored the tiny invaders. The giants’ formidable strength would not have been enough to overcome their adversary’s sheer numbers. After enough battles, the choice for these immense beings must have been obvious-- Flee or be annihilated. Some chose oblivion, giving birth to the glorious bedtime stories in our lore…
Others fled. Hiding from view, keeping to the outskirts, they searched for a sanctuary so remote, so desolate, and so uninviting, that their relentless persecutors wouldn’t bother with it. Eventually, they settled within the ice of the great glaciers of Antarctica, establishing a peaceful, isolated colony that flourished undisturbed for centuries. Then a clever scientist mixed up a batch of elements creating a superconducting material which worked in cold, but livable temperatures. Unlimited cheap power and unbridled computing instantly transformed the Last Continent into a lucrative chunk of real estate. Humans poured in, domesticating the harsh environment. It was inevitable they’d collide with the hidden giants. Only this time there was no place left for them to run… This time there would be war.
The Mermaid Chronicles
Science Fiction, Young Adult
In 2004, an onslaught of three hurricanes changed the course of a river in Northeast Florida, exposing a skeleton that had, for half a millennium, been hidden by the water and silt. Although similar to and certainly related, the bones weren't quite human. The chest cavity was too large. There was even evidence suggesting that the two lowest ribs formed a pair of slits. Other minor tweaks, here and there, added -fodder to the uniqueness of the find. . And then there was . the tail. Fantastic as it may seem, the skeleton was clearly a merman! To confound the mystery further, both the skull and one arm exhibited evidence of blunt trauma that never healed. The creature had apparently been murdered. How did this aquatic being come to be? What did it look like? How did it behave? How had its existence been kept secret for so long? Who killed it? Are there more? To find the story behind this magnificent discovery, there had to be an investigation to determine just what happened five hundred years ago. Plowing for answers through historical records revealed an epic tale involving pirates, slavery, Indians, and mermaids that could only happen in the "Sunshine State."
